EMBRACING ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Every independent mortgage broker travels a unique path on their entrepreneurship journey. There are ups and downs, successes and failures. What you learn from those experiences is what helps you keep going and growing. It’s what helped Sanjay A., now an independent mortgage broker, on his journey to becoming a disruptor and leader in the wholesale mortgage industry.

WEARING MULTIPLE HATS

Sanjay’s entry into the mortgage business came in 2005 when he joined a mortgage broker in Houston, TX to help create and streamline the brokerage’s processes, including underwriting, processing and closing. He went on to help larger lenders set up their loan operations centers.

These experiences helped Sanjay see industry challenges firsthand and learn how to solve problems involving cost, speed and scalability. They also showed Sanjay the opportunity that existed for him to blaze his own trail in the business.

“The whole ecosystem is so large and growing that it always encourages folks like me to start something on their own and still impact the borrowers that we are trying to take care of,” he said.

an education in entrepreneurship

Sanjay has always had the entrepreneurial bug. As is the case with most who people who become business owners, Sanjay had to overcome some obstacles early in his career.

“I tried two times before, failed, learned, failed, learned, and then I took a long time to work for somebody else, got myself educated and then I thought, now the time is right,” said Sanjay of his previous experiences.

After earning his MBA from a prestigious university Houston, Sanjay was able to combine his mortgage knowledge with his newly sharpened business acumen. It was then that he decided to go out on his own with a clearer vision of what he was looking to accomplish as a business owner.

“Timing is the most important piece in getting the entrepreneurship journey started,” he said. “I’m loving it. My family sees it in me. They see it in my moods, they see it in my temperament, they see how much self-employment and being responsible for your own self brings.”

the intersection of humanity and technology

“If you close loans faster because of technology and helping the borrower through the process, then there’s a 90 percent chance they’ll come back and refer to you or at least come back as a repeat customer,” said Sanjay, who is always trying to find innovative ways to make the mortgage process more seamless.

As much as he leans into technology, Sanjay is also keenly aware of the human element tied to a successful home loan experience.

“There has to be a conversation, there has to be a real thorough diagnosis of what borrowers need and not just what we want to sell,” he said.

Sanjay is happy that he gets to do that as an independent mortgage broker. He can focus on his business goals while serving his clients in the best way possible. That’s a position that every entrepreneur strives for.

“Independence to me means autonomy,” he said. “Every transaction in mortgages is a unique transaction. There is no scripted approach. Our objective is to make the process simple, transparent, and memorable.”
